UCSD launches MOMI Biome, a new partnership that focuses on human milk and the microbiome
Breastfeeding is a primary driver in shaping the infant microbiome with immediate and long-term consequences for health and development. But what components in human milk help shape the infant microbiome and how exactly does it work? Can we harness the power of human milk and use it as a template to develop new therapeutics for adults that suffer from debilitating and life-threatening diseases that involve a disturbed and dysfunctional microbiome? – No better place to find out than UC San Diego!
The Larsson-Rosenquist Foundation Mother-Milk-Infant Center of Research Excellence (MOMI CORE) and the Center for Microbiome Innovation (CMI), two renowned research centers at UC San Diego, are joining forces to take a deeper look at how human milk and the microbiome are connected and how the generated knowledge can be leveraged to improve health and fight diseases in an impactful way.

Walking down HMO memory lane
The recent breakthrough developments in human milk oligosaccharide (HMO) discovery, application and commercialization are based on decades of tedious, fundamental research by an interdisciplinary group of people who believed in the power of HMOs way before it became a “cool thing”. One of them, Dr. Clemens Kunz just retired a few months ago from the Justus-Liebig-University in Giessen, Germany. Clemens was a student of Dr. Heinz Egge, who himself was a student of Dr. Richard Kuhn, who together with Dr. Paul György and others discovered HMOs.
I [Lars] joined Clemens’ group in Giessen in October 2000 and remember those days in the old villa in the Wilhelmstrasse like it was yesterday. Clemens has been a true inspiration and an excellent mentor throughout the years – and a kind and humble man – and I’m sure he’ll continue to contribute to HMO research during his “retirement”.
Following the historic string of mentors and trainees, the Bode lab is committed to keeping the legacy alive and pushing the frontiers of HMOs in years to come! What an exciting time to be working in this field thanks to those who came before us...

Meet our Collaborators - New section added to website
We work at the forefront of HMO research, but we can't do it alone. In fact, we have been very fortunate to team up researchers and clinicians from around the world who are considered some of the best in their respective disciplines.
We have created a brand-new website section to highlight some of these exciting and productive collaborations. We have started with some of the national and international cohorts we are involved in and will soon add sections on individual labs.
We strive to work with the world's experts who can apply their unique expertise to HMO research. Email to explore potential collaborations.
