Under supervision, the incumbent plays a role in the day-to-day operation for the maintenance of basic laboratory operations in the Bode Laboratory in the UCSD Department of Pediatrics. The incumbent will: extract and derivatize milk oligosaccharide samples for analysis by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC); manage the isolation and purification of milk oligosaccharides by size exclusion chromatography as well as affinity chromatography; handle, manage and genotype animals; culture and grow various tissues and bacteria; manage general maintenance of laboratory equipment; maintain sample and reagent organization and inventory; maintain and manage hazardous waste in laboratory in compliance with EH&A; maintain glassware and plastic ware in laboratory; monitor supply inventory and routine ordering; manage and monitor lab safety and post safety information.
The Bode lab is seeking outstanding postdoctoral fellows with the passion for and experience in intestinal physiology, microbe-host interactions and inflammation.
We are seeking enthusiastic and highly motivated individuals with a PhD in a relevant area (biomedical sciences, physiology, biochemistry, nutrition, etc.). Strong verbal and written communication skills as well as analytical skills are required. Experience with human milk research, glycobiology or microbiome/metabolomics research is desired.
The Bode lab is seeking outstanding students at the undergraduate or graduate level as well as established scientists with an interest in human milk bioactives research to join the team for a limited period of time.
Students from within the U.S. or from abroad looking for an internship or a graduate project are welcome to apply.
Scientists with an established track record in a related field that would like to explore opportunities for a new research direction are also welcome to apply.
In general, we are seeking enthusiastic and highly motivated individuals with strong verbal and written communication skills that have a passion for science.
UCSD Undergraduate students!
Are you interested in a career in science, but don't really have an idea how working in a lab is like? Are you looking for lab experience and maybe even your own small research project?
The Bode lab usually has 2-3 UCSD Undergraduate Students working in the lab and helping us out with the day-to-day operations. You can learn how to prepare buffers and solutions, operate lab equipment from centrifuges and lyophilzer to FPLC and qPCR, isolate and analyze oligosaccharides or even work with human tissue cultures.
If you're interested, send your CV and a brief statement of interest to Dr. Julia Najera.
